The Sunday That Chaos Took Off
Sunday. The mythical day of rest. A day when, if the calendar is kind and there are no client dogs or boarding guests, we might get to pretend we have a normal life.
I open my eyes to the familiar rumble of paws across the floor, but today… today feels different. Alice, Nicolas, and Shiva seem to understand the unspoken rules of Sunday. No walks, no chaos beyond the house. Alice lounges with her scruffy elegance, accepting that she is officially allowed to nap without guilt. Nicolas curls up with exaggerated dignity, pretending that the world outside doesn’t exist. Shiva, ever the pragmatist, sprawls on the rug, fully aware that today’s job is to supervise—quietly.
Even the cats have adopted the mood. Blossom flits between sunbeams, Mortimer wanders lazily, and Ursie occupies the stairs like a furry sentinel, approving of the rare calm.
Andy and I attempt to seize the moment. Coffee, books, maybe even a short nap. The kind of domestic luxury that only people without a pack of client dogs ever get to enjoy. For once, I don’t have to juggle leads, poop bags, or barking critiques from Alice. Nicolas doesn’t judge me for not filling his bowl fast enough. Shiva doesn’t herd me to a puddle.
The house feels… almost normal.
Alice stretches, yawns, and decides the sofa is hers for the duration of Sunday. Nicolas sighs, obviously calculating how much more relaxing he can make the day. Shiva yawns, eyes half-closed, silently evaluating whether she should chase a rogue dust particle.
Andy murmurs something about Sunday being “too quiet,” but I ignore him. We sip our coffee, the dogs lie around us like furry living cushions, and the cats maintain their eternal aloofness.
It is, by our standards, perfect. Quiet. Calm. The kind of Sunday that exists only in theory in a dog walker’s life.
Diary note: Sundays are sacred. Even chaos has to take a day off sometimes. And today, everyone—humans and animals alike—stays home, rests, and survives the rare luxury of simply being together.
Today I am grateful for:
A house full of animals, a hot coffee, a comfortable sofa, and the rare reminder that sometimes the greatest adventure is simply staying home together.
