Suitability for Group Dog Walks

Group dog walks can be a fantastic way for dogs to socialise, exercise, and explore the outdoors together. However, not all dogs are suited to this environment. The ideal dogs for group walks typically share the following characteristics:

1. Well-Socialised with Other Dogs

Dogs that enjoy the company of other dogs and display positive body language in social settings tend to thrive in group walks. They should be comfortable interacting in a calm and controlled manner.

2. Good Recall & Basic Obedience

Dogs that have reliable recall and can follow basic commands (such as sit, stay, and leave it) are much safer in a group setting, especially when walking in open spaces.

3. Non-Aggressive & Friendly Temperament

Dogs that do not show aggression towards other dogs or people are best suited for group walks. This includes dogs that do not exhibit resource guarding (over food, toys, or space) or excessive dominance.

4. Comfortable with Shared Spaces

Since group walks involve multiple dogs travelling together, suitable dogs should be comfortable riding in a vehicle or walking closely with other dogs without displaying stress or anxiety.

5. Moderate to High Energy Levels

Dogs that enjoy exercise and have the stamina to keep up with a group without becoming overly tired or overexcited are ideal.

6. No Extreme Reactivity

Dogs that excessively react to stimuli (such as other dogs, cyclists, or wildlife) may struggle in a group setting and require individual walks or training before joining a group.

7. Comfortable Walking on a Lead or Off-Lead (Where Safe & Permitted)

Dogs that can walk politely on a lead without pulling excessively and can be trusted off-lead in secure areas (with owner consent) make for easier group walks.

8. Non-Destructive or Excessively Vocal

Dogs that do not engage in destructive behaviours (chewing, digging, excessive jumping) and do not bark excessively are more suitable for group environments.

While group walks can be a wonderful experience, every dog is assessed individually to ensure their safety and happiness. For dogs that may not yet be ready, one-on-one walks or tailored training can help them gain confidence and skills for future group walks.
