Birthday Madness: Ben, Susan, and the Family Circus
Birthday Madness: Ben, Susan, and the Family Circus
Sunday begins in the usual controlled chaos fashion. Coffee in hand, I survey the living room battlefield: muddy paw prints from yesterday’s Great Canine Escape, a suspicious smear of something vaguely edible on the carpet, and leads tangled in a pattern that could probably qualify as modern art.
Today is special. Very special.
It’s Ben’s birthday.
It’s Susan’s birthday.
Susan, my ex’s mother, is a godsend. We don’t see my ex, but Susan has been fully adopted into our family. She comes to every family event, babysits when needed, hosts my kids for tea once a week, and somehow keeps a sense of normality in this chaotic household. Andy adores her. The kids adore her. Even the dogs, in their own doggy way, seem to recognise her crazy authority amidst the madness.
The house is buzzing. Everyone is arriving. Presents are stacked in teetering towers. Dogs are attempting to claim chairs as their own. Alice has already established a no-go zone around the coffee table. Nicolas is nervously calculating whether the cake constitutes a threat. Shiva is calmly assessing the risk and positioning herself strategically near any potentially falling objects.
The party itself is a whirlwind of birthday chaos and mild mayhem.
Ben receives a present that makes him laugh inappropriately loudly. Susan is delighted by the absurdity of it all, cheering every tiny movement, insisting on singing, and occasionally commandeering the dog treats for herself. The dogs naturally contribute to the spectacle. Alice attempts to sit in every lap at once. Nicolas hides behind chairs, muttering threats at passing balloons. Shiva maintains order, occasionally nudging a dog or child away from the most precarious edges of the chaos. At one point, the cake itself becomes a focal point of disaster. Candles are lit. Someone accidentally leans too close. A dog barks. A balloon pops. And in that moment, everyone laughs simultaneously—at the chaos, at the dogs, at Susan shouting instructions to Alice, and at the bizarre coincidence that two birthdays are somehow being celebrated as one.
By the end of the afternoon, the house is strewn with wrapping paper, crumbs, and general disorder. Dogs are exhausted. Kids are hyper from sugar and laughter. Adults are smiling through mild exhaustion. And Susan, as ever, has been quietly brilliant, keeping everything on track while somehow making it feel like a joyous, seamless celebration.
: Family gathered around one table, shared laughter, and another year with people I love.
