1. Golden Retriever

Golden Retrievers are friendly, patient, and eager to please. Their gentle nature makes them ideal for families with children, and they are highly trainable, excelling in obedience and therapy work.

2. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

This small breed is affectionate, sociable, and easy to care for. They love being around people and adapt well to different living situations, making them perfect for families in both apartments and houses.

3. Beagle

Beagles are curious, playful, and fantastic with children. They are sturdy and energetic, making them a great choice for active families. Their friendly nature ensures they get along well with other pets.

4. Boxer

Boxers are loyal, protective, and love to play. Their boundless energy makes them great companions for children, and they form strong bonds with their families. Regular exercise is essential to keep them happy.

5. Poodle (Standard or Miniature)

Poodles are highly intelligent, hypoallergenic, and come in different sizes. They are excellent with children and easy to train, making them great companions for families with allergies.

6. Bulldog

Bulldogs are calm, affectionate, and low-energy, making them perfect for families who prefer a more relaxed pet. Their sturdy build makes them great companions for kids, and they require minimal exercise.

7. Newfoundland

Known as "gentle giants," Newfoundlands are patient, loving, and excellent swimmers. They are protective and gentle with children, making them one of the best family dogs for those with enough space.

8. Greyhound

Greyhounds are gentle, affectionate, and surprisingly low-energy despite their reputation as racing dogs. They make great family pets but are not recommended for households with cats due to their high prey drive.

9. Staffordshire Bull Terrier

Staffordshire Bull Terriers are affectionate, loyal, and excellent with children. They are strong, energetic dogs that love human companionship. However, they can be less tolerant of other dogs, so careful socialisation is important.

10. Mongrels (Mixed Breeds)

Mixed-breed dogs can make wonderful family pets, often combining the best traits of different breeds. Many rescue dogs are great with children and can be found in shelters looking for a loving home.

Final Thoughts

When choosing a family dog, consider factors like temperament, exercise needs, and grooming requirements. A well-matched dog will bring years of joy, companionship, and love to your family.

You may notice I have not added Labrador, German Shepherd, or Collie to this list. This is because, as a trainer, these are three breeds I get called out to most. They are very desirable and often thought of as the easy option for a family dog, but all need lots of training and entertainment to stop them getting into trouble.
