🐶 Toilet Training Your Dog or Puppy: A Guide to Success 🐾

Toilet training is one of the most important early lessons for any puppy or newly adopted dog. A well-trained dog will be happier, more relaxed, and will enjoy a stronger bond with their owner. While it requires patience and consistency, the good news is that with the right approach, your furry friend will be house-trained in no time! 🏡✨

Do not forget, an adult dog may find it as hard to understand as a puppy if they have not been trained correctly the first time.

1. 🕰️ Establish a Routine

Dogs thrive on routine, so set regular feeding times and take them out at predictable intervals. Typically, puppies need to relieve themselves:

  • 🌞 After waking up

  • 🍽️ After eating or drinking

  • 🎾 After playtime or excitement

  • 🌙 Before bedtime

Take them to the same spot each time so they associate the area with toileting. 🚽🐾

2. 👀 Recognise the Signs

Watch for behaviours that indicate your dog needs to go, such as sniffing, circling, whining, or heading towards the door. Acting quickly will help reinforce the habit of going outside. 🚪🐕

3. 🎉 Use Positive Reinforcement

When your dog successfully toilets outside, immediately reward them with praise, a treat, or a favourite toy. 🦴🐶 This positive reinforcement helps them understand they’ve done something right.

4. 🧼 Handle Accidents Calmly

Accidents are inevitable, especially in the early days. If you catch your dog in the act, interrupt them with a gentle "no" 🚫 and quickly take them outside. Never punish them, as this can lead to fear and confusion. Instead, clean up any messes with an enzymatic cleaner to remove lingering scents. 🧽✨

5. 🏠 Crate Training for Success

Dogs naturally avoid soiling their sleeping areas, making crate training an effective tool for toilet training. 🏡🐕 Ensure the crate is comfortable but not too large, encouraging them to hold their bladder until they’re taken outside.

6. 🐾 Be Patient and Consistent

Toilet training won’t happen overnight, but consistency is key. Stick to the schedule, reward successes, and stay patient—your dog will get there with time and encouragement. 💖🐕

By following these steps, your pup will soon develop good toilet habits, making life easier for both of you. If you're struggling with training, TLC Dog Training Academy is here to help with expert guidance and support. 🐶📚 Happy training! 🐾🎉

🚽 Quick Toilet Training Formula 🐶

If your dog or puppy needs the toilet, ask yourself:

  • Have they just woken up? 🌞

  • Have they just eaten or had a drink? 🍽️💧

  • Have they just played or trained? 🎾📖

  • Are they turning in circles? 🔄🐕

  • Are they going to the door? 🚪🐾

If the answer is yes, take them outside immediately! 🚪🐕

Once outside, ask yourself:

  • Have they had a wee? ✅

  • Have they had a poo? 💩❓

💡 Remember: They may not poo every time they go outside, but it's still important to give them the opportunity. Puppies, in particular, often need to poo 5-30 minutes after eating.

💩 Poo Formula 🐕

If your dog hasn't had a poo yet, ask yourself:

  • Have they just eaten? 🍖⏳

  • Are they sniffing the ground more than usual? 👃🐾

  • Are they pacing or appearing restless? 🚶‍♂️🐶

  • Have they not pooed all day? 🕰️💩

If the answer is yes, give them more time outside and encourage them to go in a familiar spot. Patience is key! 🐾💖
